To make a long story short, our first day in Italy did not go as planed. To start, we didn't make our flight and then to make matters worse we lost our garment bag that contained our dress clothes, my hair product, hair dryer, and other miscellaneous items. The next day we ended up taking a flight from Atlanta to Milan, and then we took a train from Milan to Florence (The location of the wedding). We happened to arrive at the villa in Florence a half an hour late, however, the wedding was postponed an hour due to inclement weather, which then made us on time. The remainder of the night was spent at the wedding ceremony, dinner, and other festivities.

The second day brought us to Roma via train from Florence, which was one of the places Ryan wanted to go this year. Of course, the first place we had to visit was the Coliseum. Both of us have seen and heard of this historical site throughout our lives through movies, books, and friends, so we were extremely excited to actually be there and take it all in. The Coliseum definitely lives up to all its hype. After spending a couple hours at the Coliseum, we walked down to the Roman Forum. Luckily, we had a audio tour on our iPod that walked us through the Forum and taught us the history behind everything otherwise we would have been quite lost. At the end of the day we got back to our hotel and started looking for a place to eat, and the only thing we could find open near our hotel was a Chinese resturant. Somehow, eating Chinese food in Italy just does not sound right, but it turned out to be the best Chinese food rivaling even Idaho Falls' Hong Kong.

The third day was basically a whirlwind of numerous sites and a very large amount of walking. The key highlights were the Pantheon (where Raphael is buried), Piazza Navona, Boca della Verita, Fontana di Trevi, and the Spanish Steps. Today we also had a chance to eat at a authenic Italian resturant at which we ordered a true Italian pizza and throughout the day we enjoyed a couple of the famous gelatos.

The fourth day we woke up early so we would arrive on time at the entrance of the Vatican City. The full tour of the Vatican took nearly four hours and was well worth the time. The tour took us by some masterpieces including Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, Raphael's "Transfiguration", Caravaggio's "Deposition", Laocoon, and the Belvedere Torso (Hercules) among many others. The tour is neat because it lets you finish in the Sistine Chapel, so the entire tour is spent building up to the crowning moment of the Sistine Chapel, and when you get there the scale and beauty amazes you. After touring the Vatican we hopped right over to the adjacent St. Peter's Basilica, which is outstanding in its own right. After close to six hours of touring, we continued on to San Luigi del Francesi which houses several Caravaggio pieces, and then we walked over to Sant'Ignazio which has a painted ceiling done byy Andrea Pozzo. At this point in the day we were very tired and decided to finish the day with one last gelato. Afterwards we went back to the hotel and packed for our return trip home.
